During games he kept the book and coached third base with a flair we attempted but could never duplicate. He kept up a constant stream of hopeful, encouraging nonsense, musical and automatic as a carnival barker’s, like a man speaking in tongues, variations improvised on our names, on the situation, even the weather, like an ancient singer of tales. This was big-league chatter.
